UC Berkeley Hosts American Seed Trade Association

On October 3, 2018, UC Berkeley hosted the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) at an event called "ASTA meets UC Berkeley." The event was organized at the initiative of Seed Central, a public-private partnership between the seed industry and University of California campuses. The delegation included ASTA President and CEO Andrew LaVigne, Seed Central Co-Founder and Managing Director François Korn, and BioConsortia CEO Marcus Meadows-Smith. Hosted by UC Berkeley's College of Natural Resources (CNR), the Innovative Genomics Instsitute (IGI), and the American Seed Trade Association, this event provided a great chance for ASTA members to increase their awareness of relevant science, scientists, and opportunities for sponsoring research at UC Berkeley, and for students to hear about career options in the seed industry and connect with its representatives. The 30+ CEOs and research managers at the event came from international seed companies including Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, HM.Clause, Syngenta, and Rijk Zwaan. Speakers included PMB Professor Brian Staskawicz, PMB Professor Krishna Niyogi, Robinson Chair and ARE Professor David Zilberman, and PMB Cooperative Extension Specialist Peggy Lemaux, among others.

The delegation from the American Seed Trade Association met with UC Berkeley scientists and students to learn about campus science and technologies, and to talk about the industry’s medium- and long-term research and HR requirements. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for UC Berkeley researchers to present work, learn about the seed industry, and explore future employment opportunities.
